We all have a phone meaning we always have a camera with us. Our phones have come a long way in taking better photos, but there are still some simple yet easy ways to take a better picture. Here are a few easy ways to improve your pictures today.

Physically move closer instead of zooming

If at all possible, move closer to your subject instead of zooming. Unless I have no other choice I will always move my body closer to my subject instead of using the zoom on my phone. Zooming will lower the quality of the photo, so again, if you have a choice, move your feet! On my DSLR camera (my big kid camera) I only use prime lenses, which have no zoom feature, so I’m already in the habit of moving instead of zooming. Take a few pictures on your phone using the zoom and then take a few more by moving closer to your subject. Can you see the difference?

Take more horizontal shots

These days with cell phones and social media we are constantly taking vertical photos and videos. I’m definitely guilty of this! While it’s easier to hold your phone vertically, there is such beauty in a horizontal photo. It captures more of the scene and makes it easier to include everyone in the photo.  Plus, if you want a photo for your computer desktop, you’ll need a horizontal image. My husband is always reminding me to take horizontal photos so he will have one for his desktop backdrop so he can always see our smiling faces!

Straighten the horizon

One thing I always try to do is to straighten the horizon. I don’t always get it perfect in camera, but it’s one of the first things I do when editing a photo. It’s a quick fix and will greatly improve the quality of your image.

Here is a quick video showing you how to do this on an iPhone. If you have any trouble, feel free to send me a message and I’d be happy to help.

Have your subject face the window

I see this so often! You are taking a photo at a family event and a group of people will stand together with their backs to the window. Do you ever notice that the photo will end up really dark and just look wonky. A super simple way to fix that is to just have them turn towards the window. This will allow the window light to illuminate them, resulting in a better photo.
